The 2nd “Suqovuşan” International Minifootball Tournament Successfully Held in Brussels in Honor of Azerbaijan’s Independence Day
With the support of the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Belgium, Luxembourg, and Mission to the European Union, the 2nd “Suqovuşan” International Minifootball Tournament was successfully held in Brussels on June 7, 2025, in celebration of the Independence Day of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Named after Suqovuşan, one of Azerbaijan’s symbolic locations, the tournament embodied the spirit of unity, resilience, and victory, reflecting solidarity and friendship among the participants.
The team representing NATO Headquarters secured first place, while the “Madani Heroes” team was awarded second place.
More than 20 teams participated in the tournament, including teams from the embassies of Turkey, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Belgium, Luxembourg, and the EU, as well as a team formed by staff members of Azerbaijan’s Permanent Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) based in Strasbourg.
Emin Aliyev, Head of the “Madani” Azerbaijani Cultural Center and one of the event organizers, stated in his speech that the tournament is not only a sporting competition but also a manifestation of international friendship and unity:
“Suqovuşan is not merely a geographical name – it is a symbol of hope, resilience, and victory. Last year, the tournament began with 12 teams. This year, it expanded further to become an international event with the participation of diaspora communities from Germany, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and France.”
H.E. Vagif Sadikhov, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Kingdom of Belgium, expressed his gratitude to the “Madani” platform for such an initiative during the opening ceremony. He also extended greetings to the delegations from brotherly and friendly countries — Turkey, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan — and wished success to all participating teams.
Children’s teams also took part in the tournament and were awarded trophies, medals, and commemorative gifts featuring Azerbaijani symbols.
The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan is pleased to support the organization of this event and hopes that this initiative, which promotes international friendship and the spirit of sportsmanship, will continue successfully in the coming years.
