Embassy of Azerbaijan commemorates its compatriots fallen in Belgium during World War II
Today, on May 9 - the 70th Anniversary of the Great Victory over Nazism, the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan commemorated its compatriots fallen on the territory of Belgium during World War II by laying wreaths on their graves in different towns throughout the country.
During WWII, 700 thousand Azerbaijanis fought against Nazi occupants, more than 300 thousand of which lost their lives on the battlefields. 123 Azerbaijanis were awarded with the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, the highest military distinction in the country. Azerbaijan, as a major oil producer in the USSR, was also providing the Soviet Army with fuel, accounting 80 percent of total supply.
