On July 22, 2020, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov had a telephone conversation with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell.

On July 22, 2020, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov had a telephone conversation with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell. Armenian Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan also took part during the telephone conversation.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov accepted congratulations from the EU official.

The Minister informed his interlocutor about the prevention of military provocation and attempt by the Armenian armed forces to attack along the Azerbaijan-Armenia International border using artillery, as well as the current tense situation in the region. It was noted that during this provocation, the Armenian side targeted settlements near the border and civilians, as a result, a 76-year-old civilian was killed. It was brought to the attention of the opposite side that the Armenian side pursues the goal of jeopardizing the geostrategic projects located near the region. It was emphasized that the aggressive policy of the Republic of Armenia against the Republic of Azerbaijan lies in the root of the tension.

Josep Borrell stressed the importance of preventing the escalation of tensions, as well as a threat posed to important infrastructure in the region. The High Representative stressed the importance of resuming the substantive talks on the resolution of the conflict with the mediation of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs.
Jeyhun Bayramov stressed that Azerbaijan is committed to the settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict through negotiations, but also emphasized the importance of conducting substantive and result-oriented negotiations. It was brought to the attention of High Representative Josep Borrell that the Azerbaijani side doesn’t participate in the negotiations only for the sake of negotiations, it was also noted that these negotiations continue for many years, but has not achieved concrete results in the direction of addressing the consequences of the conflict. It was emphasized that the attempts of the Armenian side to delay the negotiation process under the various pretexts are unacceptable. The Minister stressed the importance of the implementation of the demands of the international community, including the UN Security Council resolutions and firm position demonstrated by the EU on the resolution of the conflict, withdraw of the occupying forces from all occupied territories of Azerbaijan and restoration of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan within its internationally recognized borders.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov thanked High Representative Josep Borrell for initiating the telephone conversation.
